We are so thrilled to introduce our inaugural cohort of Draylen Fellows! Find out more about Cristal, Sarah, Angie, and Barbara below.

My name is Cristal Martinez Perez and I’m 15 years old. I was born in Arizona but have lived in Austin for the majority of my life. I am currently a sophomore at LASA High School. I play the violin and have been playing for about 7 years. I started in a Mariachi and later learned to love classical music and joined an orchestra. I’m in the Honors Orchestra at LASA and in the Symphony orchestra in AYO. Other than music, playing soccer is one of my favorite things to do. In the future, I wish to learn how to play the piano to improve my musical skills. Career wise, I’m interested in going into the biomedical field. I hope to be accepted into the Fire Academy so I can receive an EMT Certification. It would be great if I could get Suzuki Certified as well so I could start teaching younger kids to see if that’s the career for me. I’m always excited to learn new things and I hope the future is full of education, music and opportunities.

My name is Sarah Chu and I am a freshman at McNeil High School. I started my musical education in Oklahoma when I was three and have been playing the violin since then. During my time in Austin, I’ve had the privilege to work with different teachers that have built my skills as a musician in many different aspects, and I had the opportunity to join the Austin Youth Orchestra. In my free time, I like to dance, sing, act, read, and bake. I love to make people smile, whether it’s from volunteering, performing, or just being silly. I love Pentatonix and am a diehard Pentaholic. I’m not sure what the future holds for me, but for now, I try to look for opportunities in my community where I can lend a helping hand. I am so honored to be able to be part of the Draylen Mason Fellows Program and I can’t wait to begin this new journey!

I am currently a sophomore violinist at Austin High School. I got into music when I was 3 years old. The first instrument I played was the piano. I take music very seriously and it will always be apart of my life. This program means everything to me. I play 8 instruments currently. I am classically trained in piano but I’m self taught for everything else. I’m currently in 3 music electives because I love music so much! My favorite color is blue. I love the beach and traveling. I also really love to help people!

Barbara Reyes is currently a high school senior horn player at East Austin College Prep. She started playing the french horn in 9th grade and continued to play throughout the years. She has been a part of many music programs such as Austin Soundwaves, Charter School All Region, Austin Chamber Music, and Solo Ensemble. Not only is she a hard worker in the music arena, in a tradition classroom setting she takes her academics seriously and has found a spot in the top of her class. She enjoys being active and playing Varsity volleyball, basketball, and her favorite - softball with her school. She is also a member of the 2019 Class Cabinet, National Honor Society, Destination Imagination, and Upward Bound. She has always been curious and loves learning new things! Coming from a Mexican-Cuban household, she grew up with different yet similar cultures, and enjoys meeting new people and learning more about where they came from. She also enjoys helping the community and has volunteered for many organizations like Operation Blue Santa. Barbara Reyes looks forward to attending Texas A&M University in the Fall of 2019!
